Wikipedia explains that in 1202, mathematician Leonardo of Pisa, known as Fibonacci, published Liber Abaci which laid out the sequence. In 1202 the Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa, aka Fibonacci, wrote Liber Abaci, a book which has three claims to fame in financial circles. Known as the Fibonacci sequence or the Golden Rectangle, Fibonacci's numbers were first published in the West in Liber Abaci (1202) by the Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa.
